Off-Site Safety: AKW Opens Open-Pit Mine to Emergency Responders
More than 55 emergency responders from fire departments and the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) completed a hands-on off-road driving safety training course at the active open-pit mine of Amberger Kaolinwerke. The expansive terrain provided ideal conditions for training in the safe operation of vehicles on challenging terrain.
AKW supported the event not only by providing its unique training area, but also through the active participation of the plant’s fire department.
The training program for emergency responders included various scenarios on unpaved roads, inclines, and in difficult terrain. The goal was to improve vehicle control under realistic conditions and to enhance safety during operations off paved roads.
“The event was a complete success,” says Plant Manager Dr. Matthias Kick, summing up the event. “We are happy to contribute to the safety of emergency responders and, by extension, to the protection of the general public. Exercises like this demonstrate how important hands-on training and close cooperation among all participants are for ensuring readiness in an emergency.”
The positive feedback from all participants underscored the importance of such collaborations. Consequently, there was a strong desire to continue and further expand this successful training format in the future.
