As one of the oldest subsidiaries of the Quarzwerke Group, Amberger Kaolinwerke is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year—an impressive milestone and a good time to look back.
Interview with our colleague Johannes Sieger, Environmental Manager at Quarzwerke.
Bright sunshine and many interested guests: Together with the Cologne Chamber of Industry and Commerce’s Alliance for Biodiversity, Quarzwerke demonstrated at its Frechen site how economics and ecology can work together in very concrete ways. Not as a theoretical concept, but in a way that could be seen, heard, and experienced firsthand on site.
A few weeks after Ceramitec 2026, we now have the opportunity to reflect on the trade show and its impact with some perspective.
The event once again highlighted the importance of direct, face-to-face interaction in the ceramics industry and related fields. Especially in an environment characterized by technical requirements and customized solutions, in-person dialogue remains a key factor for successful collaboration and sustainable partnerships.
Or: How to tell that raw materials have nothing to do with gender roles.

From the very beginning, it was clear to Quarzwerke that economic success and social responsibility are inextricably linked. A look back at the company’s history reveals the importance placed on employees many decades ago and how consistently this philosophy was put into practice.
One of our subsidiaries is turning 125. And we, as the parent company, are immensely proud. What began with the development of kaolin deposits in the Upper Palatinate has, over more than a century, evolved into an internationally active group of companies. Technical progress, entrepreneurial courage, and the ability to continually adapt to changing conditions have shaped the history of AKW (Amberger Kaolinwerke Eduard Kick GmbH & Co. KG) to this day.
This retrospective highlights the key events, key figures, and milestones of an extraordinary success story.
When products are successfully launched on the market, it is usually only the result that is visible—not the long road that led to it. However, the development department of the Quarzwerke Group division HPF The Minerals Engineers regularly produces innovations that require a great deal of expertise, patience, and passion.
